INBC hosts blood drive to honor infant battling Leukemia

SPOKANE, Wash. – Inland Northwest Blood Center is hosting a replenishment blood drive in Spokane, Pullman and Moscow to honor a newborn battling leukemia in the region.

Thomas Edward Harner was born at Gritman Medical Center in Moscow on December 8, 2016. After a scheduled C-section, his family noticed he was covered in bruises and had several lumps on his head and back. His doctor ran some lab tests only to find his platelets were dangerously low. He was taken by Life Flight to Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane to receive lifesaving platelets.

Thomas was later diagnosed with ALL Infant Leukemia. He has received about 30 transfusions to date and will likely need more during his ongoing treatment for Leukemia.

“I don’t think I quite grasped the extensive need that cancer patients have for these products,” said Cat Harner, Thomas’ mother. “Our first-hand experience has definitely been an eye opener for me.”

INBC continues to face a blood shortage and is calling on the community to help replenish the blood supply and provide Thomas and patients like him with the lifesaving gifts they require. His family is grateful for those who have donated and encourages others to make the lifesaving donations that helped save Thomas’ life.

“I am forever grateful to those who have donated, as they have saved his life and so many others on the pediatric oncology floor,” said Harner.

Inland Northwest Blood Center is the only blood provider to more than 35 hospitals across the Inland Northwest. They require a minimum of 200 donors each day to meet the needs of the region. A single donation can save the lives of up to three people.

Join INBC between February 5 – 11, 2017 to show support for baby Thomas and his family, along with ensuring there is an ample blood supply for those in need.
